This temple was considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was truly enormous. It is situated on the marshes to the south west of the hill on which St John’s Basilica stands. This temple that once stood by the seashore is today 5km inland due to infilling of the bay.
This 14-metre column – originally 18.4 metres in height – was reconstructed in 1973 and is all that remains of the temple but it makes for a nice reflection in the pool below. There are controversial plans to build a replica of the temple.
Athens and the Acropolis next!
