Tuesday 19th March 2013 +1.0hrs GMT: Athens, Greece Neo Classical Architecture and Graffiti!

The visit to the Acropolis over we had a very swift panoramic tour of the city including the Panathenaic Stadium, the most ancient stadium in use in the world, as an athletic stadium. Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient Greek stadium, the Panathenaic is the only major stadium in the world built entirely of white marble and is one of the oldest.

We also saw the House of Parliament with the charismatic guards in their skirt like tunics, Constitution Square, the monument to the Unknown Soldier, the National Academy, Library and University.  No photos I’m afraid – all too quick in the coach and too much traffic.

Do I want to return to Athens?  I don’t think so.  It was interesting to see the Acropolis but much of Athens is covered in graffiti and reminded me of Lisbon in Portugal another city that will not go on the bucket list for a return visit.  I assume the graffiti are a result of the grave economic problems in Greece but it is very disfiguring and says something about the current cultural attitudes that are a far cry from those of ancient Greece.
