Monday 18th March 2013 +2.0hrs GMT: Kusadasi, Turkey The Basilica of St John

After the most disgusting lunch I have ever had on a tour we made our way to the Basilica of St John – John the Apostle not Baptist who had returned to Ephesus after being exiled from Jerusalem around 47AD.  It is believed that St John spent his final years in the area around Ephesus and was buried here. A chapel was erected over his grave in the 4th century and upgraded to a Basilica by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.

Some of the foundations and marble floors have been reconstructed but there is not much of the superstructure left except for these columns on which a pair of Stalks were busy nest building.  The clacking of beaks each time the male brought back a stick to add to the nest was severe competition for our guide and of much more photographic interest than the Basilica!
