Friday 18th January 2013 1 GMT: Mindelo St Vincent Cape Verde Islands Colourful Street Life

Despite the lack of resources the Cape Verde Islands are developing as a regular port of call for cruise liners either en route to or from the Caribbean or sailing south along the African coast.  Some 30 plus cruise liners visit annually during the season that lasts from December to June.  It is also an increasingly popular destination for Europeans in search of winter sunshine by air with direct flights weekly to Lisbon and from other cities including the UK.

St Vincent like all the islands in the group is volcanic in origin.  The average temperature is around 22C with a wet season from June to December.  Today the island is in the rain shadow of its bigger sister island of San Antonio and relies on desalination for its main supply of water.  Much of the fruit and veg is grown on the fertile and lush neighbouring San Antonio and brought to the thriving and colourful Municipal Vegetable Market. The photo shows a family group of street venders that perch on every corner, their young children playing hide an seek amongst the stalls in this bustling part of the town and the sight of a ladies balancing a huge bowls of bananas on their heads for sale in the streets is not uncommon.
