Tuesday 15th January 2013 0GMT: Santa Cruz: Coffee and Stunning Architecture

The return tram ride was an aromatic affair courtesy of a rather eccentric ‘down and out’. The stench rippled down the tram like an exploding bomb as this vision in a bright blue polo shirt and tie, huge chain holding up his pants and Ugg boots wobbled down the coach.  A colourful character but you could see everyone hoping he would not choose to sit next to them and yes you guessed, he sat next to me – a memorable Pong but not to be repeated!!

I have never visited a branch of El Corte Inglès – the leading department store in Spain – not quite John Lewis but an upbeat Debenhams or Fenwicks – but since it was adjacent to the Tram Intercambadior (Bus Station) I decided that a visit was in order if only for a coffee to revive me after my aromatic experience.  I spent a very pleasant hour browsing the 7 floors discovering that clothing and many other items are much cheaper than at home and then treated myself to a Latte coffee and chocolate Brownie and ice cream!!

One objective I had set myself in the morning was to get some better pictures than in 2006 of the architecturally stunning Auditorio De Santa Cruz.  This charismatic structure designed by Calatrava appears to rise out of the sea like some huge Nautilus as the photo shows.  In the warm evening sunshine I got some great shots of this impressive building that houses two concert halls one seating 1,000 for orchestral concerts and the other 400 for a quartet music.  I am sorry I can only bring you one photo of this iconic building.

By now it was 6.00pm and time for my 1.5 mile hike back to the ship after a wonderful if rather energetic afternoon but I have one more surprise for you in my last posting from Tenerife.
