Sunday 3rd February 2013 +2.00 hrs GMT: Cape Town, South Africa So Near and Yet So Far

This morning I was due to take the cable car up Table Mountain but I had already heard that it had been shut the day before because of high winds and this morning the ‘table clothe’ was well and truly shrouding its summit.  Instead I had a tour of the city centre of Cape Town stopping at the Company Gardens that were established by the Dutch East India Company for the purpose of growing fresh vegetables and fruit to replenish ships on the long journey to the East. Today the gardens made a very pleasant retreat from the city hubbub and included some fine specimen trees and a colourful rose garden.

The National Museum sit proudly on the hill overlooking the gardens and I spent a very enjoyable hour exploring the many rock art and natural history exhibits.  It proved to be a good chance to remind myself of the various kinds of antelope that I had seen in Namibia.

This morning tour finished with a visit to Signal Hill and fine views of Robben Island and the iconic stadium that had hosted the world Cup Final in 2010.
