Wednesday 20th February 2013 +5.5 hrs GMT: The Shatabdi Express An Indian Sunrise!!

The first hour was in the dark but as the dawn came so did a thick shroud of fog.  I learnt the next day that Delhi Airport had been closed for a couple of hours that morning so we had been lucky to land in clear weather the previous evening.  As the sun rose higher in the sky, so the fog lifted and revealed India in all its glory: a monkey hopping along a wall, tented cities outside the stations for those awaiting trains and too poor to get accommodation elsewhere even supposing that there was any to be had, sacred cows tethered in the small compounds or streets or even on a station platform, although that was more likely for the Hindu population to do their daily act of charity and pay a few rupees to the attendant for some fodder to feed the cow – we were to see this a lot when we later got to Mumbai.

I tried to capture these first impressions in a couple of photos that I will post separately.  Don’t be offended by the one showing a couple of locals about their morning toilet, squatting by the rail track – this is life for real in rural India.
