A friendly bull elephant rolls along with his trunk ‘a swinging’.
We mostly only saw loan older bull elephants. You will have to wait for a later posting from Port Elisabeth to see a female herd of elephant and young led my a Matriarch.
Elephants have ten sets of teeth with each set lasting for about ten years. As the teeth grind down the older bulls take longer to gather and chew their food so they tend to separate from the females or indeed young bulls. This is safe because they have no natural predators in Etosha. Lions do take elephants in other parts of Africa but in Etosha they have ample other game to prey upon. Their teeth give an elephant a lifespan of about 60 – 70 years and they will choose a waterhole with soft vegetation close by for the last days of their life.
