Wednesday 13th March 2013 +3.0hrs GMT: Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt - St. Catherine¹s Monastery A Spectacular Drive Through the Mountains

It was a beautiful sunny morning as we drove with the usual armed escort on board and an open backed land cruiser with three armed policeman scouting the road ahead since as in Jordan this area of Sinai had received unexpected rains about a month earlier and the flash floods had damaged the road in a number of places.  All along the way we could see where the waters had flooded down the Wadis and although dry now there was a trail of fresh low vegetation indicating the path the water had taken and where the plants could still find water.  As we climbed higher so the green vegetation became more evident and in places where the Bedouins had sunk a well poly-tunnels could be seen.  Certainly the monks at the Monastery were vegetarian and grew most of their fresh vegetables.

The kaleidoscope of rock colours was wonderful to view in the bright morning sunshine.  As we climbed still higher so sand began to be more in evidence and the affect of the wind and sand on the softer sandstone provided some interesting patterns of erosion.
