The road through the desert was undergoing major refurbishment so lots of road works with the coach swinging from one carriageway to the other and travelling for some distance on dirt sections of road. Every 10 kilometres or so the coach would have to slow down to negotiate a ‘Check Point’, said to be there to slow traffic down especially through villages with a series of hefty ‘sleeping policeman’ and pill boxes with a small police station always with armed soldiers or police (See Photo). Literally every installation – e.g. power supply sub stations – was guarded in this way.
