Petra was not rediscovered until 1812 by a Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt who had heard of the legendary, hidden city and under the name of Sheikh Ibrahim he converted to Islam and managed to persuade the Bedouins to guide him to the tomb of Aaron (See photo) on the summit of the mountain of the same name and to make an animal offering.
The first extensive archaeological excavations began in 1924 and Petra became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 when the Bedouins who were living in Petra were moved to a village that now sits above the city and is home to the many guides and workers in the city.
