Thursday 28th February 2013 +4.0 hrs GMT: Dubai, United Arab Emirates An Appointment with a Big Bus The Palm Leaf

Since I was back on board by 9.00am after the balloon trip I had some breakfast and then although a little tired decided to investigate the Hop-on Hop-off Bus.  The Big Bus Company of the UK have the concessions for the Hop-on Hop-off routes in Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Muscat and were indeed offering attractive discounts for combination tickets in these cities but my tour arrangements were so complicated that I was unable to avail myself of these offers having to settle for day tickets.  Even these proved a cost effective way of getting about in these cities and seeing sites missed by the shore tours.

This morning I chose the ‘blue beach route’ that would take me out again to the Burj el Arab but via the Palm Island and the Atlantis Theme Park and Hotel.

The photo is from a brochure but will give you some idea of the shape and location of the Palm Island, a huge man-made complex of residential and commercial structures. Each settlement is in the shape of palm-tree leaf with a crowning crescent that houses the Atlantis entertainment complex. The Palm Island adds some 520 kilometres of beaches to the city of Dubai.
