After 3 hours of high speed driving we suddenly turned off the road onto the golden and red sand of the dunes. Almost immediately our young driver had the car stuck up to its axles – but he wasn’t the only one to get stuck. A very annoyed ‘lead driver’ practically hauled him out of the car and apologising to us it was our drivers first time on sand (!) proceeded to extricate us with great skill.
Needless to say we got stuck several more times with our driver becoming more and more disconcerted – he hadn’t yet mastered the technique of starting in a higher gear – well that is when he could find a gear and remembered to take the handbrake off - and applying the power in pulses rather than revving the engine until the clutch was red hot!
In the end it worked well for us because after the third or fourth time of rescuing us one of the lead drivers took us for a 5 minute taste of ‘real dune bashing’ the car at 45 degrees on its side sliding down the dunes, sand flying everywhere so that you could not see out of the windscreen! Excellent!!
I did get some video of the rescue of other cars from various predicaments but sadly I can’t bring you this via the Blog.
