The main road to Cairo was the usual mess of litter, checkpoints, potholes and traffic calming bumps with some interesting forms of family transport picking its way amongst some frenetic traffic. (See photo). There were plenty of pigeon lofts to be seen on the large private farms and ranches that lined each side of the road in this fertile area irrigated by the almighty Nile. Remember pigeon is a great delicacy in Egypt.
