The night was still young so with Joan, Rachel and Michael – fellow adventurers to the Taj Mahal – went for a drink in India’s first licensed bar – the Harbour Bar since it looks out over the harbour and the famous India Gateway – of which more later.
Operating the electronic lighting system proved an interesting challenge before retiring. I had met a less complicated version in Le Meridien Hotel in Delhi and had least learnt that if you press the ‘Master Switch’ you are immediately plunged into total darkness! In this room you not only had independent switches for every part of the suite – including the bathroom but three levels of illumination to choose from. Some of my fellow travellers never did master this technology and slept with the lights on!!! Mind you it did take several attempts to switch off the massive plasma screen TV!!! Once in bed, however, I enjoyed a luxurious night’s sleep – or was that more to do with the large brandy!?
